The origins of PERMA-K Journey come from Positive Psychology. Psychology has gained a reputation since its beginning of studying what was wrong in the human mind and development people experience throughout their lives. Rather than continue that research, this field wants to understand what is great about the resiliency of the mind and focus on happy experiences. This is the essential core to PERMA-K Journey since it is serves as the groundwork for individuals to carve their own path led by their own motivations to find their sense of happiness.

Kaizen
The world of wellness has many philosophies that influence how people approach their journeys for health improvements. In addition to PERMA, another philosophy that is part of this coaching style is Kaizen. Originating from Japan, the Kaizen philosophy is one that was made for work performance but its use can be universal. When looking at the translation of the work, kai (改 ) has rough translations as “improvement/change” and zen (善 ) is seen as either good in a virtuous or become better. When put together, kaizen is known as “continuous improvement,” where in essence this is the constant chase to keep bettering oneself.
Journey
Everyone’s story begins at birth, and the ending is at death, so there will always be chapters written in the meantime. What you do in between them is up to you, both the reader and writer. A classic format in writing these stories, as well as merging a concept from Positive Psychology, is the HERO’s journey. HERO in the context of PERMA-K is broken down into Hope, Efficacy, Resilience, and Optimism. The purpose that HERO serves is that it is a guideline since it offers a plan to maintain Hope, provides self-development to improve one’s self-Efficacy, and all of this gets put together to create an Optimistic future for the journey.
